The Woodwork curriculum begins formally in Class 5 with the students whittling, carving, shaping and sanding various simple, organic forms; animals then bowls, spoons and on to a one-piece mallet. During the first years of upper school the focus is on making small mechanical toys in wood followed by simple pieces of furniture such as stools and shelves.

Wherever possible it is good to work with green (freshly cut) wood as this gives the children an experience ‘at source’. The smell, texture and softness of green wood, help to provide a true experience of the living nature of wood. In this way the students can produce useful items from paper knives to rustic rocking chairs from willow.
